Black Box

The Low-End Mac Portable Gaming Page

FREECIV

An open source clone of Civilization II. It is free, and that's about everything interesting about it. Shares all the typical characteristics of any GNU project - cryptic documentation, lousy user interface, no integration with the standard Macintosh GUI, difficult installation and overall crap quality. It is also meant for network playing with other human players, rather than standalone combat against AI enemies, so there is a little use for it when you are a lone traveler with nothing but a powerbook as a companion.

OVERALL RATING: Avoid.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: The author is not sure. Uh-huh, that's the way it goes with the free software projects. All he knows is that the application requires a PowerPC, not because it is actually necessary, but 'because of included libraries'.

CD-ROM: No

SCREEN: Adjustable.

SLEEP: Compatible.

KEYBOARD/TRACKPAD: No problems.

BUGS: Author warns that it's a 'work in progress'.

MORE INFO/PURCHASE OPTIONS: Free. And ain't worth a dime more than that. Macintosh version website is on Geocities.
